Salisbury Township's planning director has asked
township commissioners to pursue a "Bird Town" designation for the
township.
Cynthia Sopka asked the board recently to
discuss the proposal at its February meeting.
Sopka said there are more than 800 species of
birds that have been seen by bird watchers in the township.
"I saw two rare Scarlet Tanagers in my own
backyard," said Sopka. She said these are rare birds for this area.
Scarlet Tanagers are migratory birds coming from
South America to breed in large oak tree forested areas.
Municipalities can apply for the status through
Audubon Pennsylvania, a conservation organization.
They must complete an application and agree to
work with Audubon to publish a "Bird Town" article in a newsletter,
create a Bird Town web page and post at least five street signs and one banner.
