VIDEO: Seabirds released at Bempton RSPB

Seabirds who were rescued and nursed back to health after an oil spill have been released back into the wild at RSPB Bempton.

Five guillemots, a razorbill and a puffin were set free at the cliff top reserve on Tuesday, after being rescued and looked after by staff at Scarborough Sea Life centre.

And in more good news for the Bempton site, RSPB staff confirmed that the first gannet egg of the season had been found on a cliff top ledge - a sign that the breeding season has begun.

Keith Clarkson, east coast reserve manager for the RSPB, said: “It was fantastic to see the birds fly away with no problems.

“The puffin is one or two years old and won’t be breeding for a few years yet, but hopefully we will see him back here later this summer as they often come along and look for a place to nest for in the future.”
