Birders are all aflutter – or they would be if they weren’t being so quiet – about a rare visitor to Britain.

A black-crowned night heron has made its temporary home in the lake in Pittville Park, in Cheltenham, for the last few days – and enthusiastic bird watchers are travelling from miles around to see it.

After news broke of the bird – normally resident in South America, Africa and Eurasia but not western Europe – on the Gloster Birder website, keen ornithologist David Soons headed for the lake in Pittville Park.

Mr Soons, who lives in Cirencester, said: “I was there early in the morning and there were about half a dozen others. One had been there since 4am and they hadn’t seen anything of it.
