A small
reservoir on Mynydd Hiraethog has been the focus of attention for birders in
North Wales, with the discovery of a male Ring-necked Duck on Llyn Bran near
the Sportsman’s Arms last week.
It’s the
North American equivalent of our Tufted Duck, with a distinctive peaked head
and white bands at the base of its bill and close to the tip.
The
Ring-necked is one of America’s most widely travelled ducks. It occurs
regularly in Britain and Ireland, but it’s surprisingly rare in North Wales
with just half a dozen previous records.
