As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

SPCA: Heron shot in Long Island park

Updated 9:37 am, Wednesday, May 14, 2014

VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (AP) — The Nassau County SPCA says it's investigating the shooting of a heron in Hewlett Bay Park.

A witness who was at the park with his family heard what appeared to be gunshots. Then he saw a man holding what looked like a pistol and saw the large bird fall from a tree. He called 911.

SPCA personnel took the bird to Central Veterinary Services in Valley Stream.

The veterinary clinic identified the bird as a yellow-crowned night heron.

The heron has undergone surgery. The SPCA says it is "guardedly hopeful" the bird will recover.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services have been notified.

In a new move to get rid of pesky pigeons, the 51st Street Station in Woodside is now echoing with the calls of predatory birds.

Hawks and falcons have not been introduced to the area, but their calls were brought to the city in the form of “squawk boxes” – electronic boxes that play recordings of the predators’ screeches so as to scare away the pigeons that have been settling in Woodside in large numbers.

This Purple Gallinule tropical marsh bird that spends the summer months in the southernmost portion of the United States, and the rest of the year in Central and South America, was plucked from the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean, 75 miles south of Nantucket, Mass. by the crew of the commercial fishing vessel "Bookie" on Jan. 16. Frank Green of Oakdale was part of the crew and brought the bird to the Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays where the bird is recovering, and awaiting transport back to a warmer climate to be released. The Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays is nurturing back to health a wayward tropical bird fished out of the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Purple Gallinule, a marsh bird ordinarily associated with areas much further south, was chomping on live crickets at the center Friday after a rescue at sea one month ago by a Long Island fisherman.
