As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Assumption man cited for killing 49 sea gulls

State wildlife and fisheries agents have cited an Assumption Parish man for killing 49 sea gulls in a suburban New Orleans parking lot.

The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, in a news release Thursday, said 30-year-old Jackoby D. Bertot, of Labadieville, was cited for violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Agents began the investigation after receiving complaints by business managers in Jefferson about a man in a white pickup truck speeding through a resting flock of sea gulls in a parking lot Sept. 2. Agents identified the driver through interviews, witness statements and multiple surveillance videos.

Bertot faces up to a $15,000 fine and six months in jail if convicted. Additional fines may be imposed for each bird killed in the alleged incident.
