As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Chicken attack costs Exmoor farmer dear

By NDJRichard | Posted: May 21, 2014

A farmer on the fringe of Exmoor is counting the cost of a dog attack which devastated her flock of free range chickens and injured other poultry.

At least 40 of Catherine Omell’s chickens were killed or later died after the daylight visit by two local spaniels at West Kidland Farm, near Knowstone, on Saturday.

The few remaining birds have been dying off as a result of the trauma, bringing an end to Catherine’s egg business for the time being.

A farming relative of the dogs’ owner has been quick to offer compensation for the damage, recognising the shock and stress they’ve caused.
