KALAMAZOO, MI -- A video showing a blue heron stalking, stabbing and swallowing a gopher is making its way around social networking sites, with comments of amazement — and skepticism — from viewers.
But Audubon Society of Kalamazoo member Russ Schipper said that herons, more commonly known for swallowing fish, are not averse to eating other animals.
"While aquatic animals are the Great Blue Heron's primary food, their diet is quite variable; as the video shows, they do come on land to prey on mammals, such as mice, chipmunks, gophers and even moles that might poke their heads out," he said.
