A Common
Moorhen has died after it was stoned by a group of men in West
Yorkshire. The incident took place at Newmillerdam on 20 January, with one of
the stones thrown leaving the moorhen in a critical state. It later died as a
result of its injuries.
The group
of young men repeatedly threw stones at the bird, leading police to appeal to
anyone who has any information on the incident. In a post shared on Facebook,
PSCO Colin Starford commented: "Wildlife Crime Team Officers are
interested in any information which may assist in identifying a group of young
males at Newmillerdam on Sunday 20 January 2019, who were witnessed throwing
stones at the wild birds.
"One
of the stones hit a Common Moorhen which later died of its injuries. If you saw
the males and can help, please contact West Yorkshire Police on 101 and ask for
a member of the Wildlife Crime Team from Wakefield."
