As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Two bird species not usually seen were spotted over the holidays during the city's annual Christmas bird count.

A Black-crowned Night Heron shocked volunteers when it was spotted during counting week because it is considered very unusual to spot one in Nanaimo.

A single Townsend's Warbler was also a surprise, because the species isn't often in the area during winter.

In total, 16,233 birds and 116 species, which are considered average numbers, were seen on count day by 75 volunteers.

The Christmas bird count has been a yearly tradition in Nanaimo for close to 50 years.
