As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Rise in sightings of rare Chinese bird

Source: Xinhua | 00:01 UTC+8 July 5, 2017

AN increasing number of Chinese mergansers, an endangered species of bird under state protection, have been spotted in China over the past three years.

Some 1,084 were spotted across the country in the winter of 2016, according to a survey by the Chinese Bird Watching Societies Network in Chongqing.

The figure was 441 and 634 in 2014 and 2015. The organization said the increases could be due to better public awareness about protecting the species and environmental improvements.
