As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Rare bird spotted in Chavakkad

Thrissur: The Masked Blue Face Booby, a rare bird seen in the deep oceans, was spotted on the beach of Chavakkad on Saturday.

The bird was caught in the rough sea and saved by fishermen. The bird was twice reported from the same beach in 1992 and 2008. The blue colour on its neck, leg and face often gives it a mask-like appearance.

“Friendly behaviour of this bird got it the name booby derived from the Spanish term bobo which means fool. Like other seabirds they are clumsy on land.

These solitary birds often lay two to three eggs at a time and practise asynchronous hatching. The species is an effective model for studying parent-offspring and sibling rivalry” says Ornithologist P.P. Sreenivasan.
