As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Rare birds return to islands as project to clear rats declared a success

By WMNlynbarton | Posted: September 22, 2014

A bid to rid two islands of rats to allow rare bird populations to flourish has been declared a success after conservationists spotted chicks for the first time in living memory.

Manx shearwater chicks were seen outside their nest burrows on St Agnes and Gugh in the Isles of Scilly following the first year of a project to remove rats.

Although Manx shearwaters have bred on these two islands for decades, eggs and chicks were always eaten by rats while they were still in their burrows.

But last winter the islands’ rats were removed and conservationists are now celebrating the first sightings of healthy youngsters.
