As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

What have Defra and the RSPB got against us?

By Western Daily Press | Posted: January 18, 2014

Yet again we hear that bird populations, particularly songbirds, are in decline.

Yet again we hear that it's all the fault of farmers. By farming more and more intensively, it appears, we are steadily driving certain species to extinction.

We know that must be true because the RSPB has told Defra it is.

And Defra, as it is currently composed – largely of civil servants who appear to have been hand-picked for their ignorance of the countryside and their dislike, if not hate of farmers – believes implicitly everything that it is told by the RSPB.
