The British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) is calling on the government to bring forward its review of the beak tipping pilot study.
Two of the three commercial-scale flocks being used to assess the impact of not tipping the beaks of free range laying hens have broken down after injurious pecking broke out among the birds.
BFREPA’s director of policy, Robert Gooch, said the proposed ban on beak tipping in the UK in 2016 should not be enforced until a workable solution to the problem has been found.
He called on the government to review the pilot study results now, rather than waiting until 2015 as currently planned.
“The results of these trials already give the government enough evidence to decide that banning beak tipping is not appropriate at this time,” he said.
