As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Volunteers from Australian Seabird Rescue (ASR) were left to pick up the pieces after a pelican was seriously injured in an alleged cruelty incident at the weekend.

On Tuesday about 3pm the group received a call about a pelican in distress at Preddys Wharf, Moruya.

The bird apparently had a broken wing.

As no ASR members were in the area, Peter West, a former member, was asked to help.

Mr West caught the bird and upon examination found the tip of its left wing broken clean off and another break closer to the shoulder.

The bird also had major bruising to the top beak.

Mr West said he took the bird to a Moruya vet where the decision was made to put it down.

"After many years dealing with injured seabirds I know that these injuries are consistent with boat or jet ski strike," Mr West said.
