As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Decapitated Birds Found On Streets In Vegas Neighborhood

May 9, 2014 4:59 PM

LAS VEGAS (CBS Las Vegas) - Residents in the valley’s east side are disgusted by what they’ve been finding in the streets.

Piles of beheaded birds are being dumped in seemingly random locations throughout the area, reports KLAS-TV.

Helen Arciaga, a Charleston Boulevard thrift shop owner has found several dead birds in an alley behind her store. “Oh, where did this come from?” she asks. “Oh my good Lord it stinks.”

Street cleaner Ryan Roskins tells KLAS-TV he’s been seeing many of the birds as he makes his rounds.

“The first time I saw it, it was a large rooster,” he said. “Everything else is there, feet, feathers. It’s just decapitated.”

He has a theory for the increase in the gruesome finds. “I actually think it must be voodoo,” said Roskins.

A West African priest tells the station that may not be the case. He says people practicing the religion of Santeria or Ifa use animal sacrifices like chickens, pigeons or goats as a means of protection or as a way to cleanse the body.

Police hunt killer responsible for beheading 15 flamingos as they slept at Frankfurt Zoo

The brutal killing of 15 flamingos, some of which were beheaded as they slept, is being investigated by German police.

WARNING: Some readers may find the images below disturbing.

Nine of the birds, known for their long necks, long legs and bright pink plumage, were found dead in their enclosure at Frankfurt Zoo on Friday, and another six were found the following day.

On both occasions the killer, or killers, struck twice at night. Some of the birds were stabbed to death while others had their heads cut or torn off.

According to reports in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung police are now examining video footage from the zoo in an attempt to identify the person responsible.

The newspaper reports that very little blood was found at the scene, prompting investigators to suggest that the birds may have been stolen from the zoo and then killed before their bodies returned.

Kent Police have appealed to members of the public to come forward if they have any further information on the horrific incident

A man is wanted by police on suspicion of beheading a swan and stuffing it in his bag at a picturesque lake.

The unnamed man seen wearing a red jacket, was seen stuffing the lifeless body of a swan into his red and black rucksack at 18-acre Bennett’s Lake in Hildenborough, Kent.

It's not known why the man took the swan, but some locals have speculated that he may have wanted it for his dinner.

The amateur photographer who took the picture of the man allegedly stealing the swan last week, passed it onto his friend, wildlife lover Steve Robinson - who immediately handed it in to Kent Police for further investigation.

Mr Robinson said: 'This b****** is killing swans in the Tonbridge area, here he is after putting one in his bag.'

Mr Robinson said his friend was fishing at the popular lake when he spotted the man apparently attack the swan on March 18, at around 4pm, cutting its head off at the bottom of the neck so it would fit into his rucksack.

The onlooker rushed over to tell the man to stop, but it was too late and the swan had already been decapitated and slung into the rucksack.

The man then ran off when he realised that someone had spotted him.

Kent Police have launched an investigation, but said no arrests have been made.

A spokesman told Mail Online: 'Kent Police is investigating a report that a man decapitated a swan in Tonbridge.

Headless Birds Found in San Francisco Believed to be Part of an Animal Sacrifice

Here's your disturbing news of the day: Some headless birds were found near Lake Merced, wrapped in red-and-black sheets and bundled in candles and plants in what appears to be some kind of animal sacrifice.

According to KTVU, workmen stumbled upon the decapitated birds in broad daylight yesterday morning near a frontage road that crews use to work on the gully and fences near the lake.

"Extremely unusual for this to be out here -- we're not even sure what it is," Sgt. Russell Gordon told KTVU.

But over at Animal Care & Control, officers know exactly what it is.

The sheets wrapped around the Chukar partridges were also marked with symbols, leading experts on this grisly topic to believe someone was holding an animal sacrifice ceremony.
