As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Thousands sign petition to end kite and buzzard killings

Posted on: 30 Aug 2014

An RSPB Red Kite volunteer has urged the government to take action over bird of prey persecution, after thousands signed the petition she set up.

RSPB volunteer Andrea Goddard has handed over a petition to Scottish government minister Paul Wheelhouse MSP demanding greater action over wildlife crime. Mrs Goddard, who helps out at RSPB Scotland’s Tollie Red Kites visitor centre in Ross-shire, was so outraged by the killing of 16 Red Kites and six Common Buzzards earlier this year, that she set up an online petition which has attracted support from more than 6,900 people. The petition asks the government to extend the investigative authority of SSPCA inspectors, providing them with greater powers to tackle wildlife crime in Scotland.

Protests in Highland capital at raptor poisonings

Support is growing for a petition and Facebook group set up in the wake of a shocking case of bird poisoning.

A total of 19 birds of prey have died in the Conon Bridge area over the past few weeks and wildlife experts say they were killed deliberately.

The deaths have caused a public outcry and almost 500 people have now signed a petition on change.org urging the government to give the SSPCA greater statutory powers to combat wildlife crime.

The Let’s Get MAD for Wildlife Facebook group, which launched the petition, has also attracted more than 1000 likes from concerned members of the public.

The growing support for action comes just days after at least 200 protesters gathered in Inverness High Street for a ‘Ghost Raptor’ awareness event.

Organised by the RSPB, it involved campaigners and members of the public walking around the city centre carrying life-size cut-outs of red kites in protest at the recent mass poisoning of the Black Isle’s bird population.

Sign petition: stop wild life sanctuary destruction

A recent decision by the Portuguese government to develop parts of Lagoa dos Salgados, a lagoon in the Algarve area, is likely to have a detrimental impact on the wildlife in the area, including a vital nesting and migration sanctuary for birds.
Some of the species of birds that can be found at the site include Grebes, Gulls, Little Terns, Coots, Flamingos, the rare Purple Gallinule, Black Terns, Peregrines, Black Winged Kites, and Collared Pratincoles, amongst many other wild life species.
A petition has been launched to stop the development and if it reaches 40,000 signatures the issue will be raised in the Portuguese Parliament.
