As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Cattle egret in Donegal

Unusual sighting of ‘pig egret'

January 2013. Surprisingly a cattle egret has been spotted on a Pig Farm in St Johnson, Co Donegal. The Cattle Egret is a cosmopolitan species of heron usually found in the tropics, subtropics and warm temperate zones, although it has been expanding its range northwards recently. It occurs in Spain and in some places on the west coast of France, but it is unusual north of the Channel.

The photographs were taken by Christine Cassidy, of Derry, Danny Mc Laughlin of the Inishowen Wildlife Club and Dermot Mc Laughlin, Chairman of The Inishowen Wildlife Club, who all witnessed the sighting off this rare bird.
