As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Unattended backpack in Lakewood: Bird in coconut found

LAKEWOOD — A backpack left unattended forced the closure of two city streets Wednesday, but police officers were surprised to see the contents: a half of a coconut with a live bird inside.

The bird appears to be an immature mourning dove, so young that it was unable to fly, according to Sgt. Maureen McGilloway, who was at the scene.

Police believe the backpack with the bird — and a few toys and food inside — may have been left by someone unable to care for the bird.

“It looks like someone was trying to nurture or take care of it, but how it ended up in the backpack, we haven’t a clue,” township Police Lt. Robert Smith said.

Police got the call at 6:40 p.m. that someone had spotted the unattended backpack in front of the post office on Clifton Avenue, police said.

Township police shut down Clifton Avenue between Main and First streets and brought in the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department explosives detection K9, police said.

Carefully, the trained explosives investigators opened the backpack to determine the contents.
