Fall migration brings bird show to town


To see interesting birds this fall, it may not be necessary to travel to a far-flung location.

Migration will bring the show right to you.

Local parks, nature preserves, wildlife sanctuaries, backyards and even downtown green spaces all can harbor migrating birds at one time or another.

In Springfield, Lincoln Memorial Garden & Nature Center, Adams Wildlife Sanctuary and Riverside and Carpenter parks all are productive birding spots.

Lake Springfield and Sangchris Lake also draw migratory water birds and have public access areas.

H. David Bohlen, assistant curator of zoology at the Illinois State Museum, says common species of warblers like black and white warblers, magnolia warblers and American redstarts are passing through now in good numbers.

Warblers are woodland songbirds that mostly nest in the northern United States and Canada. A few species nest in central Illinois, like common yellowthroats and yellow warblers.
