As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

DEC: A bird, not a bullet, struck Scenic Railroad on Sunday

FORESTPORT, N.Y. (WKTV) - What was originally thought to be a bullet that had struck a window of the Adirondack Scenic Railroad over the weekend has now been determined to be a bird, the Department of Environmental Conservation said on Friday.

Officials with the Adirondack Scenic Railroad said that passengers on board the railroad knew something had happened Sunday afternoon because a window of the train was shattered, but fortunately, no one was hurt.

The train was on its way back to the City of Utica from a leaf-peeping trip up north and the full train had just passed Forestport when it happened. State Police originally said they were looking into whether it was a stray bullet from a hunter or something else.

It turned out to be something else, as on Friday, officials with the DEC said they were called in to assist State Police and determined that it was a bird that had struck the window and shattered it, not a bullet.
