As regular CFZ-watchers will know, for some time Corinna has been doing a column for Animals & Men and a regular segment on On The Track... particularly about out-of-place birds and rare vagrants. There seem to be more and more bird stories from all over the world hitting the news these days so, to make room for them all - and to give them all equal and worthy coverage - she has set up this new blog to cover all things feathery and Fortean.

Endangered bird stands in way of Queensland Premier’s dredge spoil dumping

9:26pm January 9, 2015

Rostratula benghalensis small.jpgJanuary 09, 2015: Leaked emails reveal that Queensland Premier Campbell Newman’s government has been warned that the giant make-or-break Galillee coal project could harm the endangered painted snipe.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman is pushing ahead with plans to dump dredge spoil from the Galilee coal mines at Abbot Point in the state’s north, despite the World Wide Fund for Nature warning of the effect it will have on a local endangered bird.

The painted snipe lives on Abbot Point, a bird with fewer than 5000 specimens left.

The World Wide Fund for Nature has said it has warned Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt that Abbot Point is one of the most important habitats for the species.
